Sumer war eine alte Zivilisation und historische Region im südlichen Mesopotamien, dem heutigen südlichen Irak, während der Chalkolithischen und der frühen Bronzezeit. Doch einige Gelehrte wie Piotr Michalowski und Gerd Steiner bestreiten die Idee einer proto-euphrateischen Sprache oder einer Substratsprache. Es wurde von ihnen und anderen vorgeschlagen, dass die sumerische Sprache ursprünglich die der Jäger und Fischervölker war, die im Sumpfland und in der östlichen Arabien Litoralregion lebten und Teil der arabischen Bifacialkultur waren.
