Wie Ferromagnetismus und atomare Spektrallinien ist die Supraleitung ein quantenmechanisches Phänomen. Es zeichnet sich durch den Meissner-Effekt aus, der vollständige Ausstoß von Magnetfeldlinien aus dem Inneren des Supraleiters, wenn er in den supraleitenden Zustand übergeht. Das Auftreten des Meissner-Effektes zeigt, daß die Supraleitung nicht einfach als die Idealisierung der vollkommenen Leitfähigkeit in der klassischen Physik verstanden werden kann. Der elektrische Widerstand eines metallischen Leiters nimmt allmählich ab, wenn die Temperatur abgesenkt wird. Bei gewöhnlichen Leitern wie Kupfer oder Silber ist diese Abnahme durch Verunreinigungen und andere Defekte begrenzt. Sogar in der Nähe der absoluten Null, zeigt eine echte Probe eines normalen Dirigenten etwas Widerstand. In einem Supraleiter fällt der Widerstand plötzlich auf Null, wenn das Material unter seine kritische Temperatur abgekühlt wird.
