Sussex
Sussex, von der alten englischen Sūþsēaxe, ist eine historische Grafschaft in Südost-England, die ungefähr im Bereich des alten Königreichs von Sussex entspricht. Im Uhrzeigersinn ist es im Westen von Hampshire begrenzt; Norden von Surrey, nordöstlich von Kent, südlich durch den Ärmelkanal und ist für die Kommunalverwaltung in West Sussex und East Sussex und die Stadt Brighton und Hove geteilt. Brighton und Hove wurden 1997 als Einheitsbehörde gegründet und erhielten im Jahr 2000 Stadtstatus. Bis dahin war Chichester die einzige Stadt von Sussex. Sussex hat drei geographische Hauptregionen, die jeweils etwa östlich nach Westen ausgerichtet sind. Im Südwesten der Grafschaft liegt die fruchtbare und dicht besiedelte Küstenebene. Nördlich davon liegen die rollenden Kreidehügel der South Downs, jenseits dessen liegt der gut bewachsene Sussex Weald. Der Name 'Sussex' stammt aus dem Königreich Sussex, nach der Legende wurde es von Ælle von Sussex im Jahre 477 n.Chr. Gegründet, dann wurde es im Jahre 825 in das Königreich Wessex und das spätere Königreich von England aufgenommen. Die Wurzeln der Region gehen zurück zu dem Ort einiger der frühesten Hominidenfunde Europas bei Boxgrove.
