Symbolismus (Kunst)
Symbolismus war eine Kunstbewegung aus dem 19. Jahrhundert in französischer, russischer und belgischer Herkunft in Poesie und anderen Künsten. In der Literatur hatte der Stil seinen Anfang mit der Veröffentlichung Les Fleurs du mal von Charles Baudelaire. Die Werke von Edgar Allan Poe, die Baudelaire sehr bewunderte und ins Französische übersetzte, waren ein bedeutender Einfluß und die Quelle vieler Tropen und Bilder. Die Ästhetik wurde von Stéphane Mallarmé und Paul Verlaine in den 1860er und 70er Jahren entwickelt. In den 1880er Jahren wurde die Ästhetik durch eine Reihe von Manifesten artikuliert und zog eine Generation von Schriftstellern an. Der Name "Symbolist" selbst wurde zuerst von dem Kritiker Jean Moréas angewendet, der den Begriff erfand, um die Symbolisten von den verwandten Dekadente der Literatur und der Kunst zu unterscheiden. Abweichend von, aber verwandt mit dem Stil der Literatur, steht die Symbolik der Kunst mit der gotischen Komponente der Romantik in Verbindung.
