In der Biologie Sympodial ist die äußere Morphologie oder die Art des Wachstums von Organismen. Pflanzen mit sympodialem Wachstum haben ein spezialisiertes laterales Wachstumsmuster, in dem das apikale Meristem beendet ist. Das apikale Meristem kann entweder verzehrt werden, um einen Blütenstand oder eine andere bestimmte Struktur zu machen, oder er kann abgebrochen werden. Das Wachstum wird durch ein laterales Meristem fortgesetzt, das den Prozess wiederholt. Das Ergebnis ist, dass der Stamm, der scheinbar stetig zu sein scheint, tatsächlich von mehreren Meristemen abgeleitet ist, anstatt einer monopodischen Pflanze, deren Stämme nur aus einem Meristem stammen. Ein Beispiel ist die Orchidee Laelia. Das apikale Meristem des Rhizoms bildet einen aufsteigenden, geschwollenen Stamm, der Pseudobulb genannt wird, und das apikale Meristem wird in einem terminalen Blütenstand verbraucht. Das fortgesetzte Wachstum tritt im Rhizom auf, wo ein laterales Meristem ein anderes Pseudobulb bildet und den Prozeß wiederholt. Dieser Vorgang zeigt sich in dem zusammengesetzten Erscheinungsbild des Rhizoms, wo jedes Segment das Produkt eines einzelnen Meristem ist, aber die sympodiale Natur eines Stammes ist nicht immer deutlich sichtbar.
