Unter einem solchen System werden einige Geschäftsjahre 52 Wochen und andere 53 Wochen haben. Hauptkonzerne, die diesen Ansatz annehmen, umfassen Cisco Systems. Dennoch ist das Geschäftsjahr mit dem Kalenderjahr für etwa 65% der börsennotierten Unternehmen in den USA und für die Mehrheit der Großkonzerne im Vereinigten Königreich und anderswo identisch. Viele Universitäten haben ein Geschäftsjahr, das im Sommer endet, um das Geschäftsjahr mit dem Schuljahr auszurichten, und weil die Schule in den Sommermonaten normalerweise weniger beschäftigt ist.
