Telnet ist ein Netzwerkprotokoll, das im Internet oder in lokalen Netzwerken verwendet wird, um eine bidirektionale interaktive, textorientierte Kommunikationseinrichtung mit einer virtuellen Terminalverbindung bereitzustellen. Benutzerdaten werden in-Band mit Telnet-Steuerinformationen in einer 8-Bit-Byte-orientierten Datenverbindung über das Transmission Control Protocol durchsetzt. Telnet wurde 1969 mit RFC 15 entwickelt, erweitert in RFC 854 und standardisiert als Internet Engineering Task Force Internet Standard STD 8, einer der ersten Internet-Standards. Historisch hat Telnet den Zugriff auf eine Befehlszeilenschnittstelle auf einem entfernten Host bereitgestellt. Die meisten Netzwerkgeräte und Betriebssysteme mit einem TCP / IP-Stack unterstützen einen Telnet-Service für die Remote-Konfiguration. Allerdings, wegen der ernsten Sicherheitsprobleme bei der Verwendung von Telnet über ein offenes Netzwerk wie das Internet, hat seine Verwendung zu diesem Zweck deutlich zugunsten von SSH abgebaut.
