Das Theremin / θɛrəmɪn /, THERR-ə-min; Ursprünglich bekannt als ætherphone / etherphone, thereminophone oder termenvox / thereminvox ist ein frühes elektronisches musikinstrument, das ohne physischen kontakt durch den thereministen kontrolliert wird. Es ist nach dem westlichen Namen seines russischen Erfinders Léon Theremin benannt, der das Gerät im Jahre 1928 patentierte. Der Steuerungsabschnitt des Instruments besteht in der Regel aus zwei Metallantennen, die die relative Position der Hände des Thereministen erfassen und die Oszillatoren für die Frequenz mit einer Hand steuern, Und Amplitude mit dem anderen. Die elektrischen Signale des Theremins werden verstärkt und an einen Lautsprecher gesendet. Der Theremin wurde in Film-Soundtracks wie Miklós Rózsa's für Spellbound und The Lost Weekend und Bernard Herrmann's für den Tag der Erde stand Still und als Thema Melodie für die ITV Drama Midsomer Murders verwendet. Dies hat zu seinem Zusammenschluss mit einem sehr unheimlichen Klang geführt. Thereminen werden auch in Konzertmusik und in populären Musikgenres wie Rock verwendet. Besonders psychedelische Rockbands wie Hawkwind haben das Theremin in ihrer Arbeit oft benutzt.
