Thermionische Emission ist der wärmeinduzierte Strom von Ladungsträgern von einer Oberfläche oder über eine Potential-Energie-Barriere. Dies geschieht, weil die dem Träger gegebene Wärmeenergie das Bindungspotential, auch bekannt als Arbeitsfunktion, des Metalls überwindet. Die Ladungsträger können Elektronen oder Ionen sein, und in älterer Literatur werden manchmal auch als "Thermionen" bezeichnet. Nach der Emission wird anfänglich eine Ladung, die gleich groß ist und entgegengesetzt im Vorzeichen der gesammelten Gesamtladung ist, im emittierenden Bereich zunächst zurückgelassen. Wenn aber der Emitter an eine Batterie angeschlossen ist, wird die zurückgelassene Ladung durch die von der Batterie gelieferte Ladung neutralisiert, wenn sich die emittierten Ladungsträger vom Emitter weg bewegen und schließlich der Emitter in demselben Zustand ist wie vor der Emission. Das klassische Beispiel der thermischen Emission ist die Emission von Elektronen aus einer heißen Kathode in ein Vakuum in einer Vakuumröhre. Die heiße Kathode kann ein Metallfilament, ein beschichteter Metallfilament oder eine separate Struktur aus Metall oder Carbiden oder Boriden von Übergangsmetallen sein. Die Vakuumemission von Metallen neigt dazu, nur für Temperaturen über 1000 K zu werden.
