Ein tontin / tɒntin / ist ein Investitionsplan zur Kapitalbeschaffung, der im 17. Jahrhundert erbaut und im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert relativ weit verbreitet ist. Es verbindet Merkmale einer Gruppenrente und einer Lotterie. Jeder Abonnent zahlt eine vereinbarte Summe in den Fonds und erhält danach eine Annuität. Als Mitglieder sterben, teilen sich ihre Anteile an die anderen Teilnehmer, und so steigt der Wert jeder Annuität. Nach dem Tod des letzten Mitglieds wird das Schema aufgehoben. In einer Variante, die die Handlung für die meisten fiktiven Versionen zur Verfügung gestellt hat, geht die Hauptstadt nach dem Tod des vorletzten Mitglieds an den letzten Überlebenden über.
