Totalismus
In der Musik ist der Totalismus ein Begriff für einen Stil der Kunstmusik, der in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren entstand, als Reaktion auf Minimalismus - parallel zum Postminimalismus, aber in der Regel unter einer etwas jüngeren Generation, die in den 1950er Jahren geboren wurde. In den frühen 1980er Jahren begannen viele junge Komponisten, Musik in die statischen Grenzen des Minimalismus zu schreiben, aber mit größerer rhythmischer Komplexität, oft mit zwei oder mehr Tempo hörbar auf einmal. Der Stil erwarb einen Namen um 1990, als es den Komponisten, die in New York City arbeiteten, deutlich wurde, dass eine Reihe von ihnen - John Luther Adams, Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham, Kyle Gann, Michael Gordon, Arthur Jarvinen, Diana Meckley, Ben Neill, Larry Polansky, Mikel Rouse, Evan Ziporyn, nutzten ua ähnliche Arten von globalen Tempo-Strukturen in ihrer Musik. Der Begriff totalist bezieht sich auf die Ziele der Musik, indem er versucht, genügend rhythmische Energie zu haben, aber auch genug Hintergrundkomplexität zu enthalten. Es gibt auch ein Echo im Begriff der "Gesamtorganisation" des Serialismus, hier nicht aus der 12-Ton-Reihe, sondern aus Henry Cowells Theorien über die Verwendung der gleichen Strukturierungsvorrichtungen für den Rhythmus, die traditionell für Tonhöhe verwendet wurden.
