Transcoding
Transcoding ist die direkte Analog-Analog- oder Digital-Digital-Umwandlung einer Codierung in eine andere, wie zB Filmdatendateien, Audiodateien oder Zeichenkodierung. Dies geschieht in der Regel in Fällen, in denen ein Zielgerät das Format nicht unterstützt oder eine begrenzte Speicherkapazität hat, die eine reduzierte Dateigröße erfordert oder inkompatible oder veraltete Daten in ein besseres oder modernes Format umwandelt. In der analogen Video-Welt kann die Transcodierung nur während der Suche von Dateien durchgeführt werden, sowie für die Präsentation. Zum Beispiel sind Cineon- und DPX-Dateien weit verbreitet als gemeinsames Format für digitales Kino verwendet worden, aber die Datengröße eines zweistündigen Films beträgt etwa 8 Terabyte. Diese große Größe kann die Kosten und Schwierigkeiten bei der Bearbeitung von Filmdateien erhöhen. Allerdings hat die Umwandlung in ein JPEG2000 verlustfreies Format eine bessere Kompressionsleistung als andere verlustfreie Codierungstechnologien, und in vielen Fällen kann JPEG2000 Bilder auf Halbgröße komprimieren. Transcoding ist häufig ein verlustreicher Prozess, der Generationsverlust einführt; Die Transcodierung kann jedoch verlustfrei sein, wenn die Eingabe verlustfrei komprimiert wird und die Ausgabe entweder verlustfrei komprimiert oder unkomprimiert ist.
