Usenet
Usenet ist ein weltweit verteiltes Internet-Diskussionssystem. Es wurde aus der Allzweck-UUCP-DFÜ-Netzwerkarchitektur entwickelt. Duke University Graduate Studenten Tom Truscott und Jim Ellis konzipiert die Idee im Jahr 1979 und es wurde 1980 gegründet. Benutzer lesen und Post Nachrichten an eine oder mehrere Kategorien, bekannt als Newsgroups. Das Usenet ähnelt einem Bulletin Board System in vieler Hinsicht und ist der Vorläufer für Internetforen, die heute weit verbreitet sind. Usenet kann oberflächlich als Hybrid zwischen E-Mail und Web-Foren angesehen werden. Diskussionen werden wie bei Webforen und BBSes verschraubt, obwohl Beiträge nacheinander auf dem Server gespeichert werden. Ein bemerkenswerter Unterschied zwischen einem BBS oder Web-Forum und Usenet ist die Abwesenheit eines zentralen Servers und dedizierten Administrator. Das Usenet verteilt sich auf ein großes, ständig wechselndes Konglomerat von Servern, die Nachrichten in sogenannten Newsfeeds speichern und weiterleiten. Einzelne Benutzer können Nachrichten von einem öffentlichen Server, der von einem kommerziellen usenet-Anbieter, ihrem Internetdienstanbieter, einer Universität, einem Arbeitgeber oder einem eigenen Server betrieben wird, an einen lokalen Server senden.
