V-Chip
V-Chip ist ein allgemeiner Begriff für Technologie, die in Fernsehapparatempfängern in Kanada, Brasilien und den USA verwendet wird, die das Blockieren von Programmen auf der Grundlage ihrer Bewertungen erlauben. Es ist für die Verwendung von Eltern gedacht, um ihre Kinderfernsehen zu betreiben. Die seit 1999 für den US-amerikanischen Markt hergestellten Fernsehgeräte und alle Einheiten ab Januar 2000 müssen die V-Chip-Technologie haben. Die Idee, solche Programme zu blockieren, wurde 1994 von Brett West und John P. Gardner patentiert und in Kanada getestet. Seitdem wurden viele Geräte mit V-Chip-Technologie hergestellt. V-Chip-Technologie funktioniert ähnlich wie die Untertitelung und nutzt das vertikale Austastintervall im Fernsehsignal. Das System erhält einen speziellen Code im Sendesignal, das die Punktzahl der Show nach einem einfachen numerischen Rating-System für Gewalt, Sex und Sprache anzeigt. Die Signale der Programme werden entsprechend ihrer Bewertung auf der Linie 21 des Vertikal-Austastintervalls des Rundfunksignals unter Verwendung des XDS-Protokolls codiert, und dies wird durch den V-Chip des Fernsehgeräts erkannt.
