Vanadium
Vanadium ist ein chemisches Element mit dem Symbol V und der Ordnungszahl 23. Es ist ein hartes, silbrig-graues, duktiles und verformbares Übergangsmetall. Das Element findet sich nur in chemisch kombinierter Form in der Natur, aber einmal künstlich isoliert, stabilisiert die Bildung einer Oxidschicht das freie Metall etwas gegen weitere Oxidation. Andrés Manuel del Río entdeckte Verbindungen von Vanadium im Jahre 1801 in Mexiko, indem er ein neues Blei-tragendes Mineral analysierte, das er "braunes Blei" nannte und vermutete seine Qualitäten auf das Vorhandensein eines neuen Elements, das er Erythronium nannte, Die meisten seiner Salze wandten sich von ihrer ursprünglichen Farbe zu rot. Vier Jahre später war er jedoch von anderen Wissenschaftlern überzeugt, dass Erythronium mit Chrom identisch war. Chloride von Vanadium wurden 1830 von Nils Gabriel Sefström erzeugt, der damit bewies, dass ein neues Element beteiligt war, das er nach der skandinavischen Göttin der Schönheit und der Fruchtbarkeit "Vanadium" nannte, Vanadís. Beide Namen wurden der breiten Farbpalette zugeschrieben, die in Vanadiumverbindungen gefunden wurde. Del Rios Blei-Mineral wurde später Vanadinit für seinen Vanadiumgehalt umbenannt.
