Viskosität
Die Viskosität eines Fluids ist ein Maß für seinen Widerstand gegen allmähliche Verformung durch Schubspannung oder Zugspannung. Für Flüssigkeiten entspricht es dem informellen Begriff der "Dicke". Zum Beispiel hat Honig eine viel höhere Viskosität als Wasser. Die Viskosität beruht auf der Reibung zwischen benachbarten Partikeln in einer Flüssigkeit, die sich mit unterschiedlichen Geschwindigkeiten bewegt. Wenn das Fluid durch ein Rohr gezwungen wird, bewegt sich das Fluid im allgemeinen in der Nähe der Achse und ganz langsam in der Nähe der Wände; Daher ist ein gewisser Druck erforderlich, um die Reibung zwischen den Schichten zu überwinden und die Flüssigkeit zu bewegen. Für das gleiche Geschwindigkeitsmuster ist die erforderliche Belastung proportional zur Viskosität des Fluids. Die Viskosität einer Flüssigkeit hängt von der Größe und Form ihrer Partikel und den Attraktionen zwischen den Partikeln ab. Eine Flüssigkeit, die keine Scherspannung aufweist, wird als eine ideale Flüssigkeit oder eine unsichtbare Flüssigkeit bezeichnet. Die Nullviskosität wird nur bei sehr niedrigen Temperaturen beobachtet, bei Superfluiden. Ansonsten haben alle Flüssigkeiten eine positive Viskosität. Ist die Viskosität sehr hoch, z. B. in der Tonhöhe, so scheint die Flüssigkeit kurzfristig fest zu sein.
