Vulkanisation
Vulkanisation ist ein chemisches Verfahren zur Umwandlung von Naturkautschuk oder verwandten Polymeren in mehr haltbare Materialien über die Zugabe von Schwefel oder anderen äquivalenten Härtungsmitteln oder Beschleunigern. Diese Additive modifizieren das Polymer durch Bildung von Querverbindungen zwischen einzelnen Polymerketten. Vulkanisierte Materialien sind weniger klebrig und haben überlegene mechanische Eigenschaften. Obwohl die Aushärtung von Gummi seit prähistorischen Zeiten durchgeführt wurde, wurde der moderne Vulkanisierungsprozess, benannt nach Vulkan, dem römischen Feuergott, erst im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelt. Heute werden eine Vielzahl von Produkten mit vulkanisiertem Gummi hergestellt, darunter Reifen, Schuhsohlen, Schläuche und Förderbänder. Hartvulkanisierter Kautschuk wird manchmal unter den Markennamen Ebonit oder Vulkanit verkauft und wird verwendet, um Artikel wie Klarinette und Saxophon Mundstücke, Bowlingbälle und Hockey Pucks zu machen.
