Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay ist eine Stadt in Namibia und der Name der Bucht, auf der es liegt. Die Stadt hat 85.000 Einwohner und besitzt 29 Quadratkilometer Land. Die Bucht ist ein Hafen für Seeschiffe wegen seines natürlichen Tiefseehafens, geschützt durch den Pelican Point Sandspieß, der einzige natürliche Hafen jeder Größe entlang der Küste des Landes. Da sie reich an Plankton und Meeresbewohner waren, zogen diese Gewässer auch eine große Anzahl von südlichen rechten Walen, die Walfänger und Fischereifahrzeuge anzogen. Die Holländer nannten es als Walvisch Baye und die Engländer als Whale Bay. In seiner eventuellen Proklamation wurde es genannt Walfish Bay, dann Walvish Bay, und schließlich Walvis Bay. Es wurde auch als Walwich Bay oder Walwisch Bay bezeichnet. Eine Folge von Kolonisten entwickelte den Standort und die Ressourcen dieser strategischen Hafenregelung.
