Waschbrett
Ein Waschbrett ist ein Werkzeug, das für Handwäschekleidung entworfen ist. Mit der mechanisierten Reinigung der Kleidung, die bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts immer häufiger wird, ist das Waschbrett für seine ursprüngliche Nebennutzung als Musikinstrument besser bekannt geworden. Das traditionelle Waschbrett ist gewöhnlich mit einem rechteckigen Holzrahmen konstruiert, in dem eine Reihe von Rippen oder Riffelungen für die zu reibende Kleidung angebracht ist. Für die Waschbretter aus dem 19. Jahrhundert waren die Kämme oft aus Holz; Im 20. Jahrhundert waren die Metallkanten häufiger. Ein "geriffelt" Metall-Waschbrett wurde in den Vereinigten Staaten im Jahre 1833 patentiert. Zink-Waschbretter wurden in den Vereinigten Staaten aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts hergestellt. Im späten 20. Jahrhundert und Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts sind Rillen aus verzinktem Stahl am häufigsten, aber einige moderne Bretter sind aus Glas. Waschbretter mit Messingkämmen sind noch gemacht, und einige, die Waschbretter als Musikinstrumente verwenden, bevorzugen den Klang der etwas teureren Messingbretter.
