Western Ghats
Die Western Ghats sind eine Bergkette, die fast parallel zur Westküste der indischen Halbinsel verläuft. Es ist ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe und gehört zu den acht "heißesten Hotspots" der biologischen Vielfalt in der Welt. Es wird manchmal die Große Escarpment von Indien genannt. Die Strecke verläuft von Norden nach Süden am westlichen Rand des Deccan Plateaus und trennt das Plateau von einer schmalen Küstenebene, genannt Konkan, am Arabischen Meer. Insgesamt wurden neununddreißig Objekte wie Nationalparks, Wildschutzgebiete und Reservewälder zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt - zwanzig in Kerala, zehn in Karnataka, fünf in Tamil Nadu und vier in Maharashtra. Die Strecke beginnt in der Nähe der Grenze von Gujarat und Maharashtra südlich des Tapti-Flusses und führt etwa 1.600 km durch die Bundesstaaten Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu und Kerala, die in Kanyakumari an der Südspitze Indiens enden. Diese Hügel umfassen 160.000 km2 und bilden das Einzugsgebiet für komplexe Flussabwassersysteme, die fast 40% von Indien ablaufen. Die westlichen Ghats blockieren Niederschläge zum Deccan Plateau. Die durchschnittliche Höhe beträgt etwa 1.200 m.
