Der Walhai ist ein langsam bewegter Filter, der Hai füttert und die größte bekannte vorhandene Fischart. Die größte bestätigte Person hatte eine Länge von 12,65 m und ein Gewicht von mehr als 21,5 Tonnen, und unbestätigte Berichte von deutlich größeren Walhaien existieren. Es ist das einzige Mitglied der Gattung Rhincodon und die Familie, Rhincodontidae, die zur Unterklasse Elasmobranchii in der Klasse Chondrichthyes gehört. Die Art entstand vor etwa 60 Millionen Jahren. Der Walhai ist in tropischen und warmen Ozeanen zu finden und lebt im offenen Meer mit einer Lebensdauer von etwa 70 Jahren. Walhaie haben sehr große Münder, und als Filterförderer füttern sie hauptsächlich auf Plankton. Das BBC-Programm Planet Earth filmte einen Walhai, der auf einer Schule von kleinen Fischen fütterte.
