Der Whooping Crane, der höchste nordamerikanische Vogel, ist ein gefährdeter Kran, der für sein Keuchensound benannt ist. Im Jahr 2003 gab es etwa 153 Paar Keuchkräne. Zusammen mit dem Sandhill Crane ist es eine von nur zwei Kranarten, die in Nordamerika gefunden wurden. Die Lebensdauer des Whooping Crane wird auf 22 bis 24 Jahre in der Wildnis geschätzt. Nachdem sie bis 1941 an die Grenze des Aussterbens durch unregulierte Jagd und Verlust des Lebensraumes an nur 21 wilde und zwei gefangene Whooping Cranes gedrückt wurden, haben die Erhaltungsbemühungen zu einer begrenzten Erholung geführt. Ab 2011 gibt es schätzungsweise 437 Vögel in freier Wildbahn und mehr als 165 in Gefangenschaft.
