Koordinaten: 53 ° 21'47 "N 2 ° 43'41" W / 53.363 ° N 2.728 ° W / 53.363; -2.728 Widnes ist eine Industriestadt in Halton, Cheshire, England; Es hatte eine Bevölkerung von 58.300 im Jahr 2010. Historisch in Lancashire, ist es am nördlichen Ufer des Flusses Mersey, wo die Mündung verengt, um die Runcorn Gap zu bilden. Direkt nach Süden über die Mersey ist die Stadt Runcorn. Upstream und 8 Meilen nach Osten ist die Stadt Warrington, und stromabwärts nach Westen ist Speke, Teil der Stadt Liverpool. Die Nachfrage nach Arbeitskräften wurde durch eine groß angelegte Einwanderung aus Irland, Polen, Litauen und Wales erreicht. Die Stadt ist nach wie vor ein bedeutender Hersteller von Chemikalien. Widnes und Hough Green Bahnhöfe sind auf der Liverpool nach Manchester Linie. Die Hauptstraßen durch die Stadt sind die A557 in Nord-Süd-Richtung und die A562 Ost-West. Der stillgelegte Sankey Canal endet in einem Gebiet, das als Spike Island bekannt ist.
