Workfare ist ein alternatives Modell für konventionelle Sozialsysteme. Der Begriff wurde erstmals 1968 von dem Bürgerrechtsführer James Charles Evers eingeführt; Allerdings wurde es von Richard Nixon in einer Fernsehsendung im August 1969 populär. Traditionelle Sozialhilfe-Systeme werden in der Regel auf der Grundlage bestimmter Bedingungen, wie die Suche nach Arbeit, oder auf der Grundlage von Sitzungskriterien, die den Empfänger als nicht verfügbar, um Beschäftigung zu suchen oder werden würde vergeben werden beschäftigt.
