Röntgenkristallographie
Die Röntgenkristallographie ist ein Werkzeug, das zur Identifizierung der atomaren und molekularen Struktur eines Kristalls verwendet wird, bei dem die kristallinen Atome einen Strahl von einfallenden Röntgenstrahlen verursachen, um in viele spezifische Richtungen zu beugen. Durch die Messung der Winkel und Intensitäten dieser gebeugten Strahlen kann ein Kristallograph ein dreidimensionales Bild der Dichte von Elektronen innerhalb des Kristalls erzeugen. Aus dieser Elektronendichte können die mittleren Positionen der Atome im Kristall bestimmt werden, ebenso wie ihre chemischen Bindungen, ihre Störung und verschiedene andere Informationen. Da viele Materialien Kristalle wie Salze, Metalle, Mineralien, Halbleiter sowie verschiedene anorganische, organische und biologische Moleküle bilden können, ist die Röntgenkristallographie von grundlegender Bedeutung für die Entwicklung vieler wissenschaftlicher Felder. In den ersten Jahrzehnten des Gebrauchs bestimmte diese Methode die Größe der Atome, die Längen und Arten der chemischen Bindungen und die atomare Skalenunterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Materialien, insbesondere Mineralien und Legierungen. Das Verfahren zeigte auch die Struktur und Funktion vieler biologischer Moleküle, einschließlich Vitamine, Medikamente, Proteine und Nukleinsäuren wie DNA.
