Ein Jahr ist die Orbitalperiode der Erde, die sich in ihrer Umlaufbahn um die Sonne bewegt. Für einen Beobachter auf der Erde entspricht dies der Zeit, in der es die Sonne braucht, um einen Kurs im ganzen Tierkreis entlang der Ekliptik zu vervollständigen. In der Astronomie ist das Julianische Jahr eine Zeiteinheit, definiert als 365,25 Tage von jeweils 86400 SI Sekunden. Es gibt kein allgemein akzeptiertes Symbol für das Jahr als Zeiteinheit. Das Internationale System der Einheiten schlägt nicht vor. Eine gemeinsame Abkürzung im internationalen Gebrauch ist ein, in Englisch auch y oder yr. Wegen der axialen Neigung der Erde sieht der Verlauf eines Jahres das Vorgehen der Jahreszeiten, gekennzeichnet durch Wetterveränderungen, Stunden des Tageslichts und folglich Vegetation und Fruchtbarkeit. In gemäßigten und subpolaren Gebieten werden in der Regel vier Jahreszeiten erkannt: Frühling, Sommer, Herbst und Winter, astronomisch markiert von der Sonne, die die Punkte der Tagundnachtgleiche und der Sonnenwende erreicht, obwohl die Klimasaison hinter ihren astronomischen Markern zurückbleibt. In einigen tropischen und subtropischen Regionen ist es üblicher, von der Regenzeit gegenüber der Trockenzeit zu sprechen.
