Simbabwe / zɪmbɑːbweɪ /, offiziell die Republik Simbabwe, ist ein Binnenland im südlichen Afrika, zwischen den Zambezi und Limpopo Flüsse. Es grenzt an Südafrika im Süden, Botsuana im Südwesten, Sambia im Nordwesten und Mosambik im Osten. Die Hauptstadt ist Harare. Simbabwe erreichte die britische Regierung im April 1980 nach 14 Jahren als unerkannter Staat unter der konservativen weißen Minderheitsregierung von Rhodesien, die im Jahre 1965 einseitig die Unabhängigkeit erklärte. Das jetzige Gebiet wurde erstmals von der britischen Südafrika-Gesellschaft von Cecil Rhodes in den 1890er Jahren abgegrenzt und wurde 1923 zur Selbstverwaltungskolonie als Südrhodesien. Präsident Robert Mugabe ist Staatsoberhaupt und Oberbefehlshaber der Streitkräfte. Als Planer für die antikoloniale Sache bekannt, wird Mugabe auch als autoritär angesehen und verantwortlich für die problematische Menschenrechtsrekord von Simbabwe und einen erheblichen wirtschaftlichen Niedergang.
