Zonenschmelzen ist eine Gruppe von ähnlichen Verfahren zur Reinigung von Kristallen, bei denen ein schmaler Bereich eines Kristalls geschmolzen wird und diese geschmolzene Zone entlang des Kristalls bewegt wird. Der geschmolzene Bereich schmilzt an seiner vorderen Kante unreine Festigkeit und hinterlässt eine Spur von reinem Material, die hinter ihm verfestigt wird, während er sich durch den Barren bewegt. Die Verunreinigungen konzentrieren sich in der Schmelze und werden zu einem Ende des Barrens bewegt. Zone Raffinerie wurde von William Gardner Pfann in Bell Labs als Methode zur Herstellung von hochreinen Materialien für die Herstellung von Transistoren entwickelt. Seine frühe Verwendung war auf Germanium zu diesem Zweck, aber es kann auf praktisch jedes Solut-Lösungsmittel-System mit einer nennenswerten Konzentrationsdifferenz zwischen festen und flüssigen Phasen im Gleichgewicht erweitert werden. Dieses Verfahren wird auch als Float-Zonen-Verfahren bekannt, insbesondere in der Halbleitermaterialbearbeitung.
