Abnormal ist ein subjektiver Satz von Eigenschaften, der ihnen in einem Zustand von Fieber oder Seltenheit gegeben wird. Festzustellen, wer normal und anormal ist, ist das Problem, das in abnormaler Psychologie umstritten ist. Es gibt einige gemeinsame Kriterien. Ein einfaches Kriterium ist selten statistisch. Es hat einen Nachteil - der intelligenteste, ehrlichste oder glücklichste ist derselbe wie anomal wie sonst. Somit werden abnormale Gewohnheiten als statistisch und unerwünscht angesehen. Die detaillierteren Kriterien sind unruhig. Jemand, der einen Zustand von düster, besorgt, deprimiert usw. zeigt, wird als abnormal angesehen. Unglücklicherweise sind sich viele ihrer eigenen mentalen Zustände nicht bewusst, und während sie unterstützt werden können, glauben sie nicht, dass sie es bekommen müssen. Andere Kriterien sind moralisch. Das bereitet eine Menge Ärger, weil es unmöglich ist, eine Vereinbarung eines moralischen Satzes zu Diagnosezwecken zu erreichen. Ein häufiges Kriterium ist die Maladaptivität. Wenn sich eine Person so verhält, dass sie ihren Zustand zerstört, gilt sie als maladaptiv. Obwohl es strenger als die obigen Kriterien ist, hat es auch Schwächen.
