GATT oder allgemeine Vereinbarung über Preise und Handel wurde 1948 in Genf, Schweiz, gegründet. Zum Zeitpunkt der Errichtung umfasste das GATT 23 Länder, aber auf dem letzten Treffen in Marrakesch am 5. April 1994 waren es 115 Länder. Die am 1. Januar 1948 in Kraft getretene Vereinbarung im GATT ist in drei Grundsätzen enthalten: ▪ Das wechselseitige Prinzip, dass die Behandlung, die ein Land einem anderen Land als Handelspartner gewährt, auch von dem Handelspartner dieses Landes geleistet werden muss. ▪ Das Prinzip der Meistbegünstigung, die GATT-Mitgliedsstaaten, kann nicht nur für eine oder eine bestimmte Gruppe von Ländern vorteilhaft sein. ▪ Der Grundsatz der Transparenz, dass die Behandlung und Politik eines Landes transparent sein sollte, um von anderen Ländern erkannt zu werden. Im Einklang mit seiner Entwicklung benötigt jedes GATT-Mitgliedsland Freihandel. Auf der Tagung vom 5. April 1994 in Marrakesch, Marokko, wurde das GATT ab dem 1. Januar 1995 in die Welthandelsorganisation umgewandelt.

GATT atau perjanjian umum tentang kadar-kadar dan perdagangan ditubuhkan pada tahun 1948 di Genewa, Switzerland. Pada masa ditubuhkan, GATT dianggotai 23 negara, tetapi pada saat sidang terakhir di Marakesh pada 5 April 1994 jumlah negara penandatangan sebanyak 115 negara. Kesepakatan dalam GATT yang mulai berlaku sejak 1 Januari 1948 tertuang dalam tiga prinsip, iaitu : ▪ Prinsip kesalingan, iaitu perlakuan yang diberikan suatu negara kepada negara lain sebagai rakan dagangnya harus juga diberikan juga oleh rakan dagang negara tersebut. ▪ Prinsip most favored nation, iaitu negara ahli GATT tidak boleh memberikan keistimewaan yang menguntungkan hanya pada satu atau sekumpulan negara tertentu. ▪ Prinsip ketelusan, iaitu perlakuan dan dasar yang dilakukan suatu negara harus telus agar diketahui oleh negara lain. Sesuai dengan perkembangannya, masing-masing negara anggota GATT menghendaki adanya perdagangan bebas. Pada pertemuan di Marakesh, Maghribi 5 April 1994 GATT diubah menjadi World Trade Organization mulai tarikh 1 Januari 1995.
