Astrometrie - die älteste Abteilung der Astronomie, die sich mit Messungen der scheinbaren Positionen und Bewegungen von Himmelskörpern beschäftigt. Es teilt die kugelförmige Astronomie mit der mathematischen Theorie, die zur Beschreibung von Bewegungen des Himmelskörpers und der praktischen Astronomie benötigt wird, einschließlich der Theorie astrometrischer Instrumente, Beobachtungsmethoden und ihrer Entwicklung. Fast gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts benutzte die Astrometrie hauptsächlich Bodeninstrumente, die die Rotation der Erde um ihre eigene Achse nutzten, um die relativen Positionen der Himmelskörper genau zu bestimmen. Auf diese Weise wurden zahlreiche astrometrische Sternenkataloge mit ihren Positionen und Bewegungen erstellt. Auf diese Weise wurde der Hubble GSC verwendet, um das Hubble-Weltraumteleskop an die richtige Stelle am Himmel zu führen.

Astrometria – najstarszy dział astronomii zajmujący się pomiarami pozornych położeń i ruchów ciał niebieskich. Dzieli się na astronomię sferyczną, zawierającą matematyczną teorię potrzebną do opisywania ruchów ciał na sferze niebieskiej oraz astronomię praktyczną, obejmującą teorię przyrządów astrometrycznych, metody obserwacji i ich opracowywania. Niemal do końca XX w. astrometria posługiwała się głównie instrumentami naziemnymi wykorzystującymi w swej konstrukcji obrót Ziemi wokół własnej osi, do dokładnego wyznaczania względnych położeń ciał na sferze niebieskiej. W ten sposób powstały liczne katalogi astrometryczne gwiazd, zawierające ich położenia i ruchy własne. Inną często stosowaną metodą pomiarową było użycie fotografii i wykonywanie pomiarów położeń obiektów na kliszy fotograficznej. W ten sposób powstał Hubble GSC, wykorzystywany przy naprowadzaniu Kosmicznego Teleskopu Hubble'a na właściwe miejsce na niebie.
