Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden Browns Bewegungen entdeckt, ein indirekter Beweis für die Körnigkeit der Materie. Im frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert untersuchten Physiker die innere Struktur von Atomen und zeigten, dass sie teilbar sind. Theorien der Quantenmechanik erlaubt, mathematische Modelle des Inneren eines Atoms zu schaffen. Atome haben eine Größe von 10-10 m und eine Masse von 10-26 kg. Sie können durch Rastertunnelmikroskop beobachtet werden. Mehr als 99,9% der Masse des Atoms sind in seinem Kern enthalten.

Idea istnienia niepodzielnych składników materii pojawiła się już w pismach starożytnych filozofów indyjskich i greckich. W XVII i XVIII wieku chemicy potwierdzili te przypuszczenia, identyfikując pierwiastki chemiczne i pokazując, że reagują one ze sobą w ściśle określonych proporcjach. W XIX wieku odkryto ruchy Browna, będące pośrednim dowodem ziarnistości materii. Na początku XX wieku fizycy zbadali wewnętrzną strukturę atomów, pokazując tym samym, że są one podzielne. Teorie mechaniki kwantowej pozwoliły stworzyć matematyczne modele wnętrza atomu. Atomy mają rozmiary rzędu 10−10 m i masę rzędu 10−26 kg. Można je obserwować przez skaningowy mikroskop tunelowy. Ponad 99,9% masy atomu jest zawarte w jego jądrze.
