Borneol - eine bicyclische organische Chemikalie aus der Terpengruppe, einer Untergruppe von Campher, die als Parfüm verwendet wird, das an Kampfer erinnert. Es ist ein Bestandteil vieler ätherischer Öle und ist ein natürliches Insektenschutzmittel. Borneol kann durch Reduktion von Campher durch die Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-Reaktion synthetisiert werden. Die gleiche Reduktion, aber schneller und irreversibler mit Natriumborhydrid ergibt Isoborneol als kinetisch kontrolliertes Reaktionsprodukt. Borneol hat zwei Enantiomere mit jeweils einer separaten CAS-Nummer. Natürlich vorkommendes D-Borneol ist optisch aktiv. Es kann in mehreren Arten von Artemisia und Dipterocarpaceae gefunden werden. Borneol – bicykliczny organiczny związek chemiczny z grupy terpenów, podgrupy kamfanów, stosowany jako środek zapachowy, przypominający kamforę. Występuje jako składnik wielu olejków eterycznych i jest naturalnym środkiem odstraszającym owady. Borneol może być zsyntezowany przez redukcję kamfory w reakcji Meerweina-Ponndorfa-Verleya. Ta sama redukcja, ale zachodząca szybciej i nieodwracalnie z borowodorkiem sodu daje izoborneol jako kinetycznie kontrolowany produkt reakcji. Borneol posiada dwa enancjomery, z których każdy posiada odrębny numer CAS. Naturalnie występujący d--borneol jest optycznie czynny. Można go znaleźć w kilku gatunkach Artemisia i Dipterocarpaceae. Jest stosowany w lecznictwie, do produkcji syntetycznej kamfory oraz perfum.
