Mainframe - eine Klasse von Computern, die hauptsächlich von großen Organisationen für kritische Anwendungen verwendet werden. Sie sind Systeme mit hoher Zuverlässigkeit. Zu ihrer Entstehung und ihrem größten Erfolg waren ihre Alternativen Minicomputer und Taschenrechner. Der Begriff Mainframe kommt von frühen Maschinen dieses Typs, aufgrund ihrer Größe und der Tatsache, dass das vollständige Computersystem aus mehreren Einheiten bestand, die getrennt waren - der Hauptrahmen war die Hauptdatenverarbeitungseinheit. Die ersten Großrechner wurden mit Elektronenröhren und dann mit Transistoren hergestellt. Später verwendeten sie integrierte Schaltungen mit niedriger Integration, wie etwa die UNIVAC 9000 aus der Mitte der sechziger Jahre. Der 256-kB-Speicher wurde aus über 1200 integrierten Schaltkreisen aufgebaut. Heute wird dieser Begriff häufig für Computer verwendet, die mit der IBM System / 360-Serie kompatibel sind, die 1965 eingeführt wurde. Der letzte Vertreter dieser Zeile ist IBM System z13. Es sollte betont werden, dass das Mainframe-Wort weder eine eingetragene Marke noch eine formale Definition eines Mainframes ist.

Termin mainframe pochodzi od wczesnych maszyn tego typu, ze względu na ich rozmiary i fakt, że kompletny system komputerowy składał się z wielu oddzielonych od siebie jednostek – main frame była to główna jednostka przetwarzająca dane. Pierwsze komputery mainframe były wykonane z zastosowaniem lamp elektronowych, potem tranzystorów. Późniejsze korzystały z układów scalonych o niskiej skali integracji, na przykład w komputerze UNIVAC 9000 z połowy lat sześćdziesiątych 256 kB pamięci było zbudowane z ponad 1200 układów scalonych Intela. Dzisiaj termin ten używany jest zazwyczaj do komputerów kompatybilnych z linią IBM System/360 zaprezentowaną w 1965 roku. Ostatnim przedstawicielem tej linii jest IBM System z13. Należy podkreślić, że słowo mainframe nie jest ani zastrzeżonym znakiem towarowym, ani też nie istnieje żadna formalna definicja komputera mainframe.
