Wyróżniamy: ▪ autopoliploidy – zwielokrotnienie garnituru chromosomów zachodzi w obrębie jednego gatunku. ▪ allopoliploidy – zwielokrotnienie garnituru chromosomów zachodzi przy tworzeniu mieszańców, np. rzepak, pszenżyto, śliwa domowa. U tych osobników brak chromosomów homologicznych. Nie tworzą gamet lub wytwarzają gamety niefunkcjonalne z rzadka funkcjonalne. ▪ amfiheksaploidy - powstają na skutek zwielokrotnienia własnego i obcego garnituru chromosomów: 6n = 2n + 2n + 2n Zjawisko występujące u takich roślin jak ziemniaki, rzepak, fasola, groch, zboża....
