In der nordischen Mythologie war Yggdrasil ein "Baum der Schrecken" oder Odin, ein gigantischer Baum mit verschiedenen Welten, einschließlich Asgard, Midgard, Utgard und Hel. Der Name Yggdrasil bedeutet wörtlich Pferd Yggra oder Pferd Odin, dessen Name Yggr ist. Der Stamm dieses Baumes basiert auf drei Wurzeln, von denen einer durch Asgard, der andere durch Midgard und der dritte durch Hel. Unter den asgardischen Wurzeln ist das Urdfest, über das die drei Nornen lebten, über die die Götter nicht einmal Macht hatten und die jeden Tag den Baum von der alten Quelle tränkten, damit seine Zweige grün sein konnten; Unter der Midgard-Wurzel ist die Quelle von Mimira. Ein Bote namens Ratatosk, ein Eichhörnchen, bewegte sich um den Baum. An der Spitze des Baumes befand sich ein riesiger Adler, der seine Flügel sprengte und Winde über die Welt brachte. Yggdrasil Wurzeln durch Niflheim wurden von dem Drachen Níðhöggra genagelt. Auch an der Spitze des Yggdrasil-Baumes lebte Ziege Heidrun seine Blätter.

W mitologii nordyckiej Yggdrasil było "Drzewem Strasznego", czyli Odyna – gigantycznym drzewem, na którym znajdowały się różne światy, w tym: Asgard, Midgard, Utgard i Hel. Nazwa Yggdrasil dosłownie oznacza koń Yggra, czyli koń Odyna, którego jednym z imion jest Yggr. Pień tego drzewa opiera się na trzech korzeniach, z których jeden przechodzi przez Asgard, drugi przez Midgard, a trzeci przez Hel. Pod korzeniem asgardzkim znajduje się święta Studnia Urd, nad którą mieszkały trzy Norny, nad którymi mocy nie mieli nawet bogowie, i które każdego dnia podlewały drzewo wodą z pradawnego źródła, aby jego gałęzie mogły się zielenić; natomiast pod korzeniem midgardzkim leży źródło Mimira. Po drzewie poruszał się przenoszący wieści posłaniec, którym była wiewiórka o imieniu Ratatosk. Na szczycie drzewa siedział ogromny orzeł, który podmuchem swoich skrzydeł powodował powstawanie wiatrów nad światami. Korzenie Yggdrasil przechodzące przez Niflheim były podgryzane przez smoka Níðhöggra. Żyjąca również na szczycie drzewa Yggdrasil koza Heidrun zjadała jego liście.
