Gateway oder Bridging Bridge ist eine Zwischenmaschine, die im Allgemeinen dazu dient, Netzwerke, separate Kollisionsdomänen miteinander zu verbinden oder sogar Protokolle zu übersetzen. Beispiele für Gateways können Router und Firewalls sein, da beide als Vermittler zwischen dem Benutzer und dem Netzwerk dienen. Ein Proxy kann auch als Gateway interpretiert werden, da er auch als Vermittler fungiert. Dies bedeutet, dass das Gateway über höhere Übertragungsleitungen nach außen Zugang hat, so dass es keinen Engpass zwischen dem externen Netzwerk und dem lokalen Netzwerk darstellt. Aus dieser Sicht wird es auch mit Sicherheitsmaßnahmen gegen externe Invasionen ausgestattet sein, wie zum Beispiel die Verwendung von verschlüsselten Protokollen. Es ist auch Aufgabe des Gateways, Pakete, die aus dem lokalen Netzwerk stammen, zu übersetzen und anzupassen, damit sie den Empfänger erreichen, aber auch die Antworten übersetzen und an das lokale Kommunikationspaar zurückgeben können. Daher ist es üblich, Adressübersetzungsprotokolle wie NAT zu verwenden, was eine der einfachsten Gateway-Implementierungen ist.

E, neste ponto de vista, estará dotado também de medidas de segurança contra invasões externas, como a utilização de protocolos codificados. Cabe igualmente ao gateway traduzir e adaptar os pacotes originários da rede local para que estes possam atingir o destinatário, mas também traduzir as respostas e devolvê-las ao par local da comunicação. Assim, é frequente a utilização de protocolos de tradução de endereços, como o NAT — que é uma das implementações de gateway mais simples.
