A lens is referred to as achromatic or an achromat when the change in the slit width with the wavelength for a wavelength disappears. Because of the dispersion of the optical materials, each single lens exhibits the so-called chromatic aberration. The refractive index increases continuously from red to blue and therefore the focal length of the lens decreases. By combining two lenses from glasses with a differently steep refractive index, see Abbe number, a reversal in the course of the cut width can be achieved with the wavelength. If the two lenses are thin and have a small distance from one another, the color transverse error which causes color fringing which is particularly troublesome at the edges of the image field at the edges of the observed objects can also be largely corrected.

Ein Objektiv wird als achromatisch oder als ein Achromat bezeichnet, wenn die Änderung der Schnittweite mit der Wellenlänge für eine Wellenlänge verschwindet. Wegen der Dispersion der optischen Materialien zeigt jede Einzellinse die sogenannte chromatische Aberration. Dabei nimmt der Brechungsindex kontinuierlich von Rot nach Blau zu und daher die Brennweite der Linse ab. Durch Kombination von zwei Linsen aus Gläsern mit unterschiedlich steilem Brechzahlverlauf, siehe Abbe-Zahl, lässt sich eine Umkehr im Verlauf der Schnittweite mit der Wellenlänge erreichen. Wenn die beiden Linsen dünn sind und einen kleinen Abstand voneinander haben, kann auch der Farbquerfehler, der insbesondere am Rand des Bildfeldes störende Farbsäume an den Kanten der beobachteten Objekte verursacht, weitgehend korrigiert werden.
