Adenovirus

Adenoviridae

Adenoviridae

The Adenoviridae family comprises uncoated viruses with a double-stranded, linear DNA as a genome. Its capsid has an icosahedral symmetry and has a special structure of the so-called pentan and hexon capsomeric characterizing the virus family. On the pentons, typical, antennae-like fiber proteins are anchored, which give the virions of the family their "satellite-like" appearance. The family currently contains 47 human and animal pathogenic virusspecies with numerous subtypes in mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. In humans human adenoviruses mainly cause respiratory diseases. The first adenoviruses were isolated in 1953 by Wallace P. Rowe from tonsils and other glandular tissue and propagated in a cell culture. In the history of molecular biology, the Adenoviridae play a significant role because in 1977 a fundamental process of gene expression was discovered, the so-called splicing.
