Benthos

The Benthos (also Benthon, single: the Benthont) is the totality of all living beings occurring in the soil zone of a body of water, the Benthal. The word comes from the Greek benthos ("sea depth", "thicket"). The corresponding property word is benthic. The benthos includes both the fixed (sessile) organisms and the crawling, running, or temporarily floating (vagile) bodies. The term was introduced by Ernst Haeckel in 1890, in order to distinguish the soil-inhabiting organisms in the sea from plankton and nekton occurring in the free water, the Pelagial. Today, the biocoenoses (living communities) of all types of waters, both inland water bodies and different marine depths, are referred to as benthos. According to the size of the living organisms one differentiates: ▪ Macrobenthos (\u003e 1 mm) ▪ Meiobenthos (1 mm to 0,063 mm) ▪ Microbenthos (under ... Das Benthos (auch Benthon, einzeln: der Benthont) ist die Gesamtheit aller in der Bodenzone eines Gewässers, dem Benthal, vorkommenden Lebewesen. Das Wort kommt vom griechischen benthos („Meerestiefe“, „Dickicht“). Das zugehörige Eigenschaftswort lautet benthisch. Das Benthos schließt sowohl die festsitzenden (sessilen) Organismen als auch die kriechenden, laufenden oder vorübergehend schwimmenden (vagilen) Bodentiere ein. Der Begriff wurde 1890 von Ernst Haeckel eingeführt, um damit die bodenbewohnenden Organismen im Meer von den im freien Wasser, dem Pelagial, vorkommenden (Plankton und Nekton) abzugrenzen. Heute werden die im benthalen Bereich anzutreffenden Biozönosen (Lebensgemeinschaften) aller Gewässertypen, sowohl der Binnengewässer als auch der verschiedenen Meerestiefen, als Benthos bezeichnet.
