It has a cone height of nine Didot points, which corresponds to 3,384 mm. The equivalent in nine DTP points measures 3.175 mm. The term "Borgis" or "bourgeois" came from the French and means "the bourgeois". It is said to have been given its name by the famous French book printer Geofroy Tory, who printed small but elegant books for the "commoners" in this book. The font size itself is first found in a book from Venice in 1498. The font was only casually poured into a nine-point cone. Mostly, a ten-point cone was used and provided with an additional signature to avoid confusion. Font sizes in many European countries have different names or similar names denoting different cone heights.

Sie hat eine Kegelhöhe von neun Didot-Punkten, das entspricht 3,384 mm. Die Entsprechung in neun DTP-Punkten misst 3,175 mm. Die Bezeichnung „Borgis“ oder „Bourgeois“ kam aus dem Französischen und bedeutet „die Bürgerliche“. Ihren Namen soll sie durch den berühmten französischen Buchdrucker Geofroy Tory erhalten haben, der in dieser Schriftgröße kleine, aber schmucke Bücher für die „Bürgerlichen“ druckte. Die Schriftgröße selbst findet sich erstmals 1498 in einem Buch aus Venedig. Der Schriftgrad wurde nur ausnahmsweise auf einen Neun-Punkt-Kegel gegossen. Meistens verwendete man einen Zehn-Punkt-Kegel und versah ihn mit einer zusätzlichen Signatur, um Verwechslungen zu vermeiden. Schriftmaße haben in vielen europäischen Ländern andere Namen oder gleiche Namen bezeichnen unterschiedliche Kegelhöhen.
