Since ancient times, the cathedra has been the symbol of the authority of a public official. In the Christian church, the cathedra of the bishop received a prominent place at the altar and stands for apostolic authority. At the same time, Kathedra also designates the Bishop's seat in the institutional sense. Die Kathedra ist seit der Antike das Symbol der Vollmacht eines öffentlichen Amtsträgers. Im christlichen Kirchenbau bekam die Kathedra des Bischofs einen herausgehobenen Platz beim Altar und steht für die apostolische Amtsvollmacht. Zugleich bezeichnet Kathedra den Bischofssitz auch im institutionellen Sinn.
