WHAT DOES DESMOSOM MEAN IN GERMAN?
Desmosom
Desmosomes are cell structures in cell membranes that produce tight disc-shaped connections between two cells. They occur particularly in cells with intense mechanical stress such as epithelial cells and some non-epithelial tissues, such as cardiac muscle, and improve their mechanical cohesion. This is mainly due to the fact that they connect the cell-like intermediate filaments with those of other cells. In the case of the epithelial cells, these are mostly the keratin filaments and, in the case of cardiac muscle cells, desmin filaments. Desmosomes appear like spherical condensations on the lateral walls of epithelial cells - comparable with press buttons or rivets. The intercellular space is slightly broadened at these sites, since it is filled with filamentous material, similar to a cement substance. On the inside of the cell membrane there are plate-like structures from Desmoplakin. Numerous non-contractile fibrillar bundles of keratin, the so-called tonofilaments, run from the entire cell nucleus into the site.
