Drosophila

Drosophila is a genus from the family of the baptism. The name "Drosophila" is a modern link of the Greek δρόσος, drósos, "Tau" with the word φίλος, phílos, "loving" and the female Latin ending -a. The genus stands before a splitting, because it contains about 1500 kinds, which differ however in part considerably in the appearance, behavior and in the propagation. Therefore, the genus was subdivided into many subgroups. As genetic studies have shown, some subgroups are more closely related to genes outside the Drosophila group than to most subgroups within this species complex. The genus Drosophila also includes the black-bellied dinosaur, which is the most popular representative of the group in genetics. It is currently located in the sub-genus Sophophora, which will be raised to a genus after a revision of the Drosophila group. The known Drosophila melanogaster is then called Sophophora melanogaster.
