Folium

Folium is the common term for a parchment or paper sheet in a code in codicology. Up to the sixteenth century, it was customary to count in books not the pages, but the sheets, and with sheet numbers mostly on the upper margin. This kind of numbering is called foliation, in contrast to the pagination in page counting. The ablative folio, abbreviated f. Or fol., Is therefore still common in all sciences dealing with ancient texts, instead of a page specification: f. 26r means "on the front of Sheet 26", f. 26v means "on the back of page 26". This census is still used today for the Talmud as well as for administrative and legal acts. In addition, folio is also the name of a historical sheet and book format. It was created in the early book printing by a single folding of the paper sheets.

Folium ist in der Kodikologie die übliche Bezeichnung für ein Pergament- oder Papierblatt in einem Kodex. Bis ins 16. Jahrhundert hinein war es üblich, in Büchern nicht die Seiten, sondern die Blätter zu zählen und mit Blattziffern meist am oberen Rand zu versehen. Diese Art der Bezifferung wird Foliierung genannt, im Unterschied zur Paginierung bei Seitenzählung. Der Ablativ folio, abgekürzt f. oder fol., ist daher in allen Wissenschaften, die sich mit alten Texten beschäftigen, noch heute üblich anstelle einer Seitenangabe: f. 26r bedeutet »auf der Vorderseite von Blatt 26«, f. 26v bedeutet »auf der Rückseite von Blatt 26«. Diese Zählung wird bis heute für den Talmud sowie für Verwaltungs- und Gerichtsakten benutzt. Daneben ist Folio entsprechend auch der Name eines historischen Blatt- und Buchformats. Es entstand im frühen Buchdruck durch einmaliges Falzen der Papierbögen.
