ileum

Ileum

The ileum is that part of the small intestine that follows the jejunum, without an exact border being drawn, and ultimately flows into the intestine via the ileum terminal with the ileocecal valve. This is the third section of the small intestine. The ileum accounts for about 60% of the entire small intestinal length and is thus up to 3 m long in adults. The villi and folds, which are so typical of the jejunum, gradually disappear in this small intestinal segment. On the other hand, accumulations of lymph follicles are found, which are located in the intestinal wall opposite the mesenteric neck, and which are referred to as Peyer's plaques or follicles of the follicular laminae as an aggregate lymph follicle. In approximately 1-3% of all human beings, a bulge of the ileum as a Meckel diverticulum - a remainder of the yolk pathway - can be present approximately 40 to 100 cm before the ileum enters the intestine. In the ileum, among other things, vitamin B12 is resorbed using the so-called intrinsic factor.
