insularity

Insularität

As an insularity, the inhabitants of the United Kingdom in particular expressed a latent sense of security that resulted both from the welcome isolation from the island situation and the status of the first naval power, at the latest after the third naval war with the Netherlands. Since the power policy of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell it was very well connected with a feeling of superiority, since no successful invasion of the British Isles had been experienced since 1066. The Spanish Armada had already been rubbed down in the English Channel in 1588, and all the attempts made by France from the 16th to the 18th century either in Scotland or Ireland, which supported the opposition there by means of smaller landings and weapons, had been doomed to failure. It was only with Napoleon that the British power policy experienced a real threat. The insularity had now to be strengthened by the preventive sea blockade of the continental ports, which should in particular include the French military forces in the ports.
