Chelatometry, also called complexometry, is a method of analytical chemistry. It is generally used for quantitative determination of the metal in aqueous solution by titration. It was developed in 1945 by Gerold Schwarzenbach. It is based on the formation of chelate complexes, looping complexes with polydentate ligands, metal ions and complexing agents. An indicator is added to the solution to be titrated. This shows a different color in the free state after bonding to the metal ion. Since the indicator is weakly bound to the metal ion, it is released when the chelate ligand is added, so that the color of the solution changes. Frequently, a buffer solution is used to keep the pH constant. Metal indicator and buffer may also be present in indicator buffer buffers. In the market, chelating agents are found, for example, under the names complexon, idranal or titriplex followed by a Roman numeral.

Die Chelatometrie, auch Komplexometrie genannt, ist eine Methode der analytischen Chemie. Sie dient zumeist der quantitativen Metallbestimmung in wässriger Lösung durch Titration. Sie wurde 1945 von Gerold Schwarzenbach entwickelt. Sie beruht auf der Bildung von Chelatkomplexen, Umschlingungskomplexen mit mehrzähnigen Liganden, aus Metallionen und Komplexbildnern. Der zu titrierenden Lösung setzt man einen Indikator zu. Dieser zeigt im freien Zustand eine andere Farbe als nach Bindung an das Metallion. Da der Indikator nur schwach an das Metallion gebunden ist, wird er bei Zugabe des Chelatliganden freigesetzt, sodass sich die Farbe der Lösung ändert. Häufig wird in einer Pufferlösung gearbeitet, um den pH-Wert konstant zu halten. Metallindikator und Puffer können auch in Indikator-Puffertabletten kombiniert vorliegen. Im Handel finden sich Chelatbildner beispielsweise unter den Namen Komplexon, Idranal oder Titriplex, gefolgt von einer römischen Ziffer.
