Marketing is an appropriate type of consumer. These are often people with an above-average income. LOHAS consumers are, for example, nature and outdoor holidaymakers, customers of organic shops or biosuppliers. Their motifs resemble those of the Slow Food movement. In the US, the phenomenon was described for the first time by the sociologist Paul Ray in the book "The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million Are Changing The World" in 2000. In Germany it was described by Eike Wenzel and Matthias Horx 'Zukunftsinstitut with the study " Target group Lohas "2007 popular. However, the term LOHAS is controversial, as some critics seem to doubt the link between high-quality consumption and sustainability. Some representatives of the traditional environmental movement see this as an attempt to give consumerism a new, zeitgeisttypical image. Others like the cultural scientist Nico Stehr praise the new power of "moralists".

Das Akronym LOHAS bezeichnet Personen, die einen Lebensstil pflegen, der von Gesundheitsbewusstsein und -vorsorge sowie der Ausrichtung nach Prinzipien der Nachhaltigkeit geprägt ist. Im Marketing handelt es sich um einen entsprechenden Konsumententyp. Häufig handelt es sich um Personen mit überdurchschnittlichem Einkommen. LOHAS-Konsumenten sind beispielsweise Natur- und Outdoor-Urlauber, Kunden von Bioläden oder Biosupermärkten. Ihre Motive ähneln denen der Slow-Food-Bewegung. In den USA wurde das Phänomen im Jahr 2000 erstmals von dem Soziologen Paul Ray in dem Buch „The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million Are Changing The World“ beschrieben, in Deutschland wurde es durch Eike Wenzel und durch Matthias Horx’ Zukunftsinstitut mit der Studie „Zielgruppe Lohas“ 2007 populär. Der Begriff LOHAS ist jedoch umstritten, da manchen Kritikern die Verknüpfung von hochwertigem Konsum mit Nachhaltigkeit zweifelhaft erscheint. Einige Vertreter der traditionellen Umweltbewegung sehen darin den Versuch, dem Konsumismus ein neues, zeitgeisttypisches Image zu geben. Andere wie der Kulturwissenschaftler Nico Stehr dagegen loben die neue Macht von „Moralisten“.
