The Masoretic text is a Hebrew text of the Tanach. It is the result of the strictly regulated treatment of older Bible manuscripts between 700 and 1000 by the Masorets. These Jewish scribes vocalized the consonant text, marked variants, other readings, parallel passages, and presumed mistakes, which have been fixed since 100, with special signs that are summarized as Masora and interpreted as early biblical text criticism. From the various Masorasystems the family Ben-Ascher from Tiberias passed through to the 11th century. It contains the oldest fully preserved manuscripts of the Tanach, which form the basis of all scientific excerpts of the Bible today. Since the Renaissance, the Tiberian-Masoretic text has been regarded as a biblical original text. This assumption has been partially weakened by the finds of older Bible handbooks of up to 1100 years under the scrolls of the Dead Sea and elsewhere. At the same time, however, these findings confirmed that the Masoretic text for most of Tanach's books is based on early Jewish Bible transmission and preserves it astonishingly accurate.

Der masoretische Text ist ein hebräischer Text des Tanach. Er ist Ergebnis der streng geregelten Bearbeitung älterer Bibel-Handschriften zwischen 700 und 1000 durch die Masoreten. Diese jüdischen Schriftgelehrten vokalisierten den seit 100 fixierten Konsonantentext, markierten Varianten, andere Lesarten, Parallelstellen und vermutete Fehler mit besonderen Zeichen, die man als Masora zusammenfasst und als frühe biblische Textkritik deutet. Von den verschiedenen Masorasystemen setzte sich bis zum 11. Jahrhundert das der Familie Ben-Ascher aus Tiberias durch. Von ihr stammen die ältesten vollständig erhaltenen Handschriften des Tanach, die allen heutigen wissenschaftlichen Bibelausgaben zugrunde liegen. Der tiberisch-masoretische Text galt seit der Renaissance als biblischer Urtext. Diese Annahme wurde durch Funde von bis zu 1100 Jahren älteren Bibelhandschriften unter den Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer und anderswo teilweise entkräftet. Zugleich aber bestätigten diese Funde, dass der Masoretentext für die meisten Bücher des Tanach auf früher jüdischer Bibelüberlieferung beruht und diese erstaunlich genau bewahrt.
